Rodgers reels in Forrest Wood Cup victory

Specific dropshot tactics seal the deal for South Carolina co-angler

By David A. Brown - 07.Aug.2010
GAINESVILLE, Ga. – Dearal Rodgers had been waiting six years for his first tournament win and achieving that special moment at the Forrest Wood Cup on Lake Lanier must have made the taste of victory infinitely sweeter.

The Camden, S.C., co-angler entered the final day of co-angler competition in first place with 18 pounds – the aggregate of his 8-15 from day one and 9-1 from day two. On day three, his four fish bag anchored by a solid 4-pounder weighed 9-3. His tournament total of 27-3 earned him a $60,000 prize.

“This is about one dollar for every morning I’ve woken my wife (April) up early getting ready to gofishing,” Rodgers said. “It’s been a long time and I’ve been trying hard.” Read Complete Story

Good Guys Do Finish First
5 years ago Camden’s Dearal Rodgers set himself the goal of becoming a professional bass fisherman within 5 years. A year ago, after earning the title of 2009 FLW Co-Angler of the Year, it seemed like that goal was within reach. He felt that he was ready for the challenge of being a professional, but the $4,000.00 per tournament entry fee meant he would need help. All of this year Dearal says he felt like there was a wall in front of him, and he couldn’t figure out how to get over it. Finally, last weekend on Lake Lanier a door opened in the wall, and Dearal walked through. A big bait largemouth bass fishermen who cut his teeth on the frequently stained water of Lake Wateree, Dearal never figured that he would win the biggest tournament of his life catching spots out of clear water on a drop shot rig with 6 pound test line. But driving home Sunday night from Atlanta with a check for 65 grand in his pocket (literally), Dearal wasn’t complaining! Read Complete Story

The Best of the Rest
Meanwhile, day-one leader Dearal Rodgers of Camden, S.C., dropped to fifth place overall with a total catch of 17 pounds, 13 ounces.

“I had a tough cookie in (pro partner) David Dudley today,” said Rodgers. “He moved really fast and it made it a little difficult to fish behind him. I could have had 10 pounds today but I missed a couple of fish on top-water bites. Right now, I’m happy to be where I am though. I’m having a good tournament and I’m going to give 100 percent tomorrow.” Complete Story
