Good Guys Do Finish First
5 years ago Camden’s Dearal Rodgers set himself the goal of becoming a professional bass fisherman within 5 years. A year ago, after earning the title of 2009 FLW Co-Angler of the Year, it seemed like that goal was within reach. He felt that he was ready for the challenge of being a professional, but the $4,000.00 per tournament entry fee meant he would need help. However, a down economy had dried up a lot of the sponsorship money that might have been available a few years ago, and so it became apparent that a jump to the professional side for 2010 wasn’t financially possible. All of this year Dearal says he felt like there was a wall in front of him, and he couldn’t figure out how to get over it. Finally, last weekend on Lake Lanier a door opened in the wall, and Dearal walked through. A big bait largemouth bass fishermen who cut his teeth on the frequently stained water of Lake Wateree, Dearal never figured that he would win the biggest tournament of his life catching spots out of clear water on a drop shot rig with 6 pound test line.
